How Dark can I tint my windows in Illinois?

March 12, 2015
Window tint applied to a vehicle, Illinois tint law

Illinois sets its tint limits by vehicle type, and the front of the car is stricter than Missouri. Our shop sits in Belleville, so this is the one most of our customers ask about. Here is what is legal in 2026.

Sedans (cars)

  • Windshield: non-reflective tint on the top 6 inches only.
  • Front side windows: 35% VLT or lighter.
  • Back side windows: 35% VLT or lighter.
  • Rear window: 35% VLT or lighter.

SUVs, vans, and trucks

  • Windshield: non-reflective tint on the top 6 inches only.
  • Front side windows: 50% VLT or lighter.
  • Back side windows: any darkness.
  • Rear window: any darkness.

More rules that matter

  • Tolerance: Illinois allows a 5% margin.
  • Mirrors: if you tint the rear glass, dual side mirrors are required.
  • No mirrored or chrome-look tint anywhere, at any VLT. Standard non-reflective film is the compliant choice.
  • Fines: a first offense is a petty offense, generally $50 to $500.

One thing to know if you cross the river: Illinois keeps the front windows lighter than Missouri, and SUVs get 50% up front. The same tint may not be legal in both states. See our Missouri window tint guide for the comparison.

Tint laws and enforcement can change. This reflects Illinois law as of 2026; confirm current rules before you rely on them.
